5 ways to maintain good skin for life
As I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, my goal is to ensure more people are taking better care of their skin for LIFE. Using active skincare is a key part of this – it’s a daily habit that should make you feel confident what you’re doing is both scientifically correct and ENOUGH. There are plenty of other ways to maintain good skin for life – it’s surprisingly easy. Here are a few nuggets.
Skin 101
Before I share the ways, let’s delve a little deeper into your skin, shall we? Skin is your largest organ. The lifelong journey of your skin begins at birth with your ancestry and genetics. Your skin consumes a lot of fuel and resources, and it keeps your body protected from a harsh and dangerous environment. Gradually, ageing and environmental damage cause your skin to deteriorate.
From birth, your skin needs to be looked after by supplying it with the right sources of energy and other molecules it requires to maintain its constant renewal of cells and protective capability. The better you protect it from the environment you live in the longer it will last.
Skin is basically your body’s armour
The body is working on the skin all the time, maintaining it in a healthy state by supplying it with the fuel, vitamins and minerals it needs to maintain its health and protection. But, from the outside, the skin is under attack every DAMN day! Not just from the sun, but from many environmental hazards. The sun is the number one threat though. So, whatever can be done to increase the strength, repair capability and protection of your armour by applying additional molecules (found in active skincare) to boost protection is a GREAT way to support your skin. Think of it like this: your skin protects you, so isn’t it about time you do all you can to protect it?
How you can maintain good skin for life
- Good general health and diet. It’s a bit of a no-brainer, but your skin needs all those excellent vitamins and minerals to enable the cells to perform their functions. We mostly get these from the food we eat – they travel from our gut through the bloodstream to our skin.
- Say it with me: sun protection, every single day, always. Great sun and environmental protection is key; skin damage accelerates its deterioration. So, avoid damage. Here’s the thing – sun doesn’t just damage skin, it REALLY damages skin.
- Be aware that your skin is damaged in other ways too! Smoking, air pollution, poor hygiene, other kinds of radiation and allergens – these all damage skin. I’m not the fun police, but I want to give you the facts so that you know how it works. Abuse it and it will age faster. Sorry - now you know.
- Treat skin issues promptly and properly. Something like acne should be treated the moment you begin experiencing it. Every scar avoided is better skin for life.
- Use active skincare (psst, that’s where I come in). Even if we don’t use sun protection well, everyone knows at some level that sun damages skin. When you’re protecting your skin from the sun - what else is worthwhile doing? THe answer to this is ACTIVE SKINCARE. Active ingredients are molecules which have an effect on the skin cells or structure, applied topically. They are mostly vitamins, but other molecules can be active – as long as they have an effect on the cells to assist in recovery from injury, or solar radiation damage, and assist in protecting your skin cells from damage to your skin cell DNA. Skin cell DNA damage is a powerful cause of a decline in your skin quality, appearance and in the development of skin cancer.
It might seem like a lot, but it’s really not hard. Healthy body, sun protection, and active skincare twice a day. Think of it like brushing your teeth - two minutes in the morning, two minutes at night, every day, and you’re done. Better skin for life.
