Angry Doctor On Call: Your most-asked skincare questions, answered (part two)

You’ve had more questions. I’ve got more answers.

Welcome to part two of your most-asked skincare questions, answered. The second most anticipated sequel of the year after Denis Villeneuve’s DUNE 2. What a masterpiece.

Let’s do it.

7. Are the products unisex?

Well, the last time I looked, all genders had skin. So yes, my products are ‘unisex’. Or as I like to call them, ‘unisexy’.

All adult skins of all genders and types will benefit from the regular application of the main active skincare molecules the skin needs to optimise its health and longevity (along with sun protection, and good general health).

8. Where do you make Angry Doctor?

We manufacture our products right here in Australia. While some of our raw ingredients are sourced from abroad, the suppliers are interrogated more than a teenager after curfew to ensure the highest quality.

9. Why do you hate the skincare industry so much?

While there are a handful of brands moving the industry forward, I believe the majority are taking us backwards. Let’s start with the science, or lack thereof. If your products are not clearly backed by evidence, they probably aren’t having much impact on your skin. Most skincare products are not backed by science.

The industry will have you believe that you’re never doing enough, which is bullshit. They’re driven by profits and need you to buy more, more, more. But you don’t need more. You don’t need 12-step programs. You don’t need an ‘eye cream’, a ‘lip cream’, a ‘nose cream’ and a ‘neck cream’. You need good general health, good sun protection habits, a Vitamin C based active product, and a Vitamin A based active product. If you do these habitually, you are doing enough. Let me repeat. YOU ARE DOING ENOUGH.

The industry has inadvertently turned a healthcare necessity into a beauty empire, creating a market that is overly confusing, expensive and unappealing to many everyday people (particularly men, but more on that in the next question). In other words, it’s put up barriers between highly effective and important skincare and those who actually need it.

10. Why’s it so hard to get my husband to use skincare?

Those identifying as male generally need more skincare but use less skincare. That's because they are often bulletproof risk-takers who want to be left alone because nothing bad will ever happen to me kind of people… Until it does.

There are many reasons men are bad at preventive health, self-care and are more likely to have poor skincare habits. Some are identity based - using skincare might not be perceived as masculine. But, to double down on my rant above, it is also true that skincare programmes have been made overly complex, feminine and expensive to increase profits.

Back to your Romeo, it typically takes up to three months to embed a new habit. If he can commit to three months use, he’s much more likely to keep it up. Especially with all the compliments you’re going to give him on his skin.

And we have worked hard to get all the actives healthy skin needs into only two products. It literally takes about the same time as applying deodorant. Morning: Apply Angry Doctor Morning Bright. Night time. Apply Angry Doctor Young Night. Sleep. Repeat. No excuses.

11. Am I too old to bother with retinal? (I’m 65)

Not at all, in fact you're just getting started. Your skin needs it. It's like saying "Am I too old for food, or Harry Potter”? Impossible.

12. Why do I need to wash my face before putting products on? What happens if I don’t?

While the dead skin cells, dirt and oil that build up on your face every day can cause breakouts, texture and dullness, you only really need to wash your face before applying actives when you’re wearing a ‘barrier’ like makeup or sunscreen. These barriers will stop the actives from really doing ‘their thang’.

With this in mind, a bit of sweat or grime won’t impact the absorption of the actives which means nothing bad will happen if you don’t always wash your face (although it might impact your closest relationships).
